Odd concoction?

There is a liquid formulation that contains collagen, shark cartilage extract, DNA (albino protein extract), hyaluronic acid, aqueous Coenzyme Q10, and vitamins B1, B2 and B6, on sale at a certain health store. It is being sold as a supplement to be taken orally and is said to promote good skin and anti-aging. Does it really work?

Dear Mary,
We are not familiar with this health supplement product. But looking at the ingredients you mentioned, we can tell you that Coenzyme Q10 is a good antioxidant and can provide anti-aging effects; and the vitamin Bs will improve general health if you have a dietary deficiency of them. As for the hyaluronic acid and collagen proteins, normally any of these ingested proteins will be digested into basic protein units or amino acids, which can then be used by your body to build other proteins later – so we doubt ingesting them will bring any health or anti-aging benefits. We have yet to hear of any supplements that contain shark cartilage and DNA extracts, and thus cannot comment on the benefits.
