Implant option

I’m in my late 50s and have been wearing dentures for about 30 years after losing all my teeth. Lately, I have been having problems with my lower denture. I had a few sets made, but they were loose and didn’t fit properly. My dentist thinks that I should have implants put in to support the denture, but I’m afraid of surgery. Any advice?

Dear G.Z.,
I have to agree with your dentist, as I can imagine that your lower jawbone has resorbed quite a lot after losing all your teeth, which is a natural effect after tooth loss.

BeforeBeforeAfterAfterIn many countries today, implant overdenture for the lower jaw has become the treatment of choice instead of the normal lower full denture.

In your case, you only need two implants (on both ends of the denture – see picture above). This is considered minor surgery and is performed under local anaesthesia. Ask your dentist about the flapless implant procedure, where the implants can be inserted through a small hole in the gum without the need for incisions.

It is normal to be a little anxious about your procedure, but rest assured that if performed by a skilled restorative dentist, it can be less painful than a tooth extraction!
