Double eyelid surgery

I am 23 years old and am considering double eyelid surgery. I would like to know if a plastic surgeon is the best person to perform the procedure? How do I know if the person chosen to perform the procedure will do a good job?

Dear M.K.M.,
The double eyelid procedure or oriental blepharoplasty is designed to provide a fold in the upper eyelid for individuals without a fold. It would seem that today anybody can create a double eyelid, ranging from trained aesthetic surgeons, cosmetic surgeons, GPs, fly-by-night foreign surgeons from our neighbouring countries working in beauty salons, right down to beauticians – all indicating that they are ‘experts’ in the procedure.

The right to operate on an individual requires a medical qualification. Anyone else can be charged with assault and battery for ‘injuring’ a client. Sadly, the public turns to untrained personnel to do their cosmetic surgery – simply because they can advertise or are located in malls etc. Only when things go wrong, do they then seek help from trained doctors.

In my opinion, you should seek consultation from a plastic surgeon who is registered with the Malaysian Association of Plastic, Aesthetic & Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons (MAPACS - www.mapacs.com/directory.htm) or the National Specialist Register (www.nsr.org.my/azhome.jsp)
