Breast reduction query
My partner would like breast reduction surgery. What factors do we need to consider, and what does the procedure involve? Will she be in a lot of pain and how soon after the procedure will she be able to resume normal activities?

Dear N.E.S.,
BeforeThere are several techniques of breast reduction surgery, and the choice of technique will depend on a few factors such as the size of the breast, the position of the scars and the surgeon’s familiarity with the type of procedure.
Ask to see before and after pictures of different surgical techniques and the position of the scars. Some techniques may cause nipple sensory loss and longer scars, but may be the safer alternative in extremely large and pendulous breasts, where blood supply can be compromised if a minimal scar technique is used.
Be clear to the surgeon about what size you would like to go down to. While most women with very large breasts will often say they want to go very small, some may want a generous curve left behind to match their body shape.
Breast reduction surgery is done under general anaesthesia and a post-operative ward stay is recommended because drains will be put in each breast to remove residual blood. Breast reduction is generally a less painful procedure than breast augmentation. A good support bra after the
Afterprocedure helps in terms of comfort, and will allow the swelling to go down faster. Wounds normally heal after about a week, by which time the patient should be able to resume normal activities.
